...Sioux dog feast, Mandan village, a chief before and after a trip to Washington...

George Catlin's Indian portraits 1830-1836 in National Portrait Gallery. America was indifferent to his 300 plus Indian chief portraits. Catlin spent the 1830's traveling among American tribes painting portraits of the chiefs, encampments, hunts, villages and wigwams. I recommend this extraordinary collection of first American peoples by George Catlin if you are in Washington DC.

Mandan Village

A chief goes to Washington…

Snapping Turtle who spoke several Indian dialects, was half Indian, and assistant to Catlin.

I could not photograph this group because the area was closed.

...Indian chiefs, buffalo chase, Old Bear medicine man, in the early American west...

...George Catlin's Indian portraits 1830-1836 in National Portrait Gallery. America was indifferent to his 300 plus Indian chief portraits. He took them to Europe where he exhibited them.  I was really excited to see Catlin's work here, finally. The Portrait gallery has many of his portraits, more than I could photograph because of light glare and a closed off section. ...more tomorrow....
